As perhaps one of the most anticipated albums of the year so far, Broken Bells eponymous debut has already won the hearts of many simply because of the personnel involved.

After meeting backstage at 2004’s Roskilde Festival the ever-influential James Mercer (The Shins) and Brian Burton a/k/a Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) have joined forces to produce and album that’ll split opinion to no end. It might not so consistently hit the pop highs of previous projects, however, with Mercer’s song writing prowess Burton’s gift for production Broken Bells is an astute piece of work that displays a maturity and subtlety best heard through repeat listening. But for the string arrangements the duo play all the instruments themselves, which adds yet more merit to an album that has the potential to be the next cult smash.
